Course TitleCreating a Schoolyard Habitat

This blended learning course which meets for two online webinars and a four and a half day face-to-face class introduces a Schoolyard Habitat Program which is a coordinated effort between schools, FWS offices and other conservation and community organizations to establish ecologically sound restoration projects that are sustainable outdoor learning areas on school sites. This course develops Schoolyard Habitat technical consultants that can assist schools at the local level in areas such as project design, plant selection, construction, maintenance, and curriculum connections. This course supports the Service’s Connecting People with Nature, Urban Wildlife Refuge and Youth initiatives. Participants must attend all sessions (both webinars and the face-to-face class) to complete the course.

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
 Explain how partnering with schools and other organizations to build schoolyard habitats meets the Service’s mission.

 Identify potential projects that may be successful schoolyard habitats.

 List steps for working with schools to complete a schoolyard habitat classroom project.

 Explain the benefits of student and school team directed schoolyard habitat classroom projects in regards to ownership and sustainability.

 Describe how schoolyard habitats support national curriculum and educational standards.

 Develop an implementation plan for a schoolyard habitat project.

Target Audience

Partners for Fish and Wildlife personnel, Refuges and Fisheries visitor services professionals, educators, outdoor recreational planners, landscape architects, or anyone whose resource management efforts would be enhanced or supported by education initiatives.
