DescriptionPopulation Viability Analysis II (CSP4120) course will explore the theory and application of quantitative tools in conservation. Emphasis will be placed on the development of skills and interpretation of model outcomes for threatened and endangered populations based on count data. Concepts and techniques covered in class will include: (1) modeling population growth and extinction risk for density-independence and density-dependence in a stochastic environment; (2) reviewing the effects of positive and negative environmental autocorrelation; (3) incorporating of extreme environmental variability into assessments; and (4) examining of the causes of demographic stochasticity.

Student Requirements: Recommend Population Viability Analysis I or equivalent.
The objective of this course is to develop critical ecological modeling skills based upon count data for predicting population trends and uncertainty; whereby, the participants will be able to assess and model the impacts to plant and animal populations.
Target Audience:
Management and Research Biologists using count data in their assessment and monitoring programs.
